• There have been confirmed cases of (H1N1) Swine Flu in Yemen. Please be aware of local media and current health reports for the most recent news on the outbreak. With the World Health Organization (WHO) raising its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6, all the necessary precautions should be taken when travelling to Yemen in the near future.

• There continues to be a high threat from terrorism in Yemen. You are advised against all travel to the Governorate of Sa’ada. Only essential travel should be made to the rest of Yemen due to the threat of terrorism and tribal violence. Past terrorist attacks have targeted Western, and British, interests. Recent incidents include attempted suicide attacks on the airport road, attacks against tourist sites and against the US Embassy. Travelers should avoid places frequented by expatriates and foreign travelers, including in Sana’a and other urban centres.

• There have been a number of kidnappings of foreign nationals since mid-2005. Travelers should exercise extreme caution when travelling outside major cities in Yemen.

• Developments in the region may trigger public unrest. Visitors should take care to avoid demonstrations which may turn hostile and be particularly vigilant in public places.

• Prior permission from the Yemen Tourist Police is required should you wish to drive to Governorates outside Sana’a. Travelers should be aware that consular assistance may be limited due to the restrictions on travel. Visitors are also recommended to avoid traveling to areas of Yemen without the correct permission.

• Medical facilities in Yemen, particularly away from the main towns, are poor. It is strongly recommended that travelers obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check for any exclusion, and ensure that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake.
