Vietnam Global Health Insurance / Vietnam Travel Advice

Whilst travelling in Vietnam, one must be aware of the norms of society and the issues that might arise in certain situations. Thus it is essential to take heed of the following travel advice.

Vietnam Travel Advice

  • There have recently been confirmed cases of the A (H1N1) or Swine flu in Vietnam, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6. Keep up to date with local reports and announcements on the outbreak.

  • Increased measures have been taken in Vietnam to prevent the spread of the swine flu (H1N1). Visitors to the nation are required to fill out health forms about the previous locations as well as be screened by heat sensors to check for signs of elevated temperature. Anyone with a temperature over 38 degrees Celsius or who has symptoms of the illness will have to undergo more tests. Any suspected H1N1 carriers will be quarantined immediately.

  • Vietnam is frequented by tropical storms and typhoons from June through December. Recent severe flooding in North and Central Vietnam (October 2008) damaged much of the infrastructure including rail connections and roads. Any planned travel to these regions should keep this in mind.

  • There have been many outbreaks of the Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) in the country leading to over 50 human deaths, some as recent as April 2009. Visitors should take all of the necessary precautions to avoid illness.

  • Hanoi Health Departments have suspended bottled water production due to violations on hygiene and safety. Certain samples were found to contain Pseudomonas aerugionosa bacteria that have been known to cause sepsis and infections in people.

  • Vietnam has Dengue Fever that is endemic and occurs year round. Care, precautions and good hygiene should be taken to avoid this dangerous illness.

  • The terror risk in Vietnam is low. This being the case, however, you should be aware of the continual global risk of terrorist attacks that typically occur in public venues where expatriates and foreign travelers are present.

  • Most visits to Vietnam are free from any serious issues and violent crimes and acts towards foreigners are few and far between. This being the case you should always be aware of your surroundings and of your belongings when visiting Vietnam, especially in more dense urban areas like Hanoi and Saigon.

  • It is recommended that you acquire a comprehensive medical and travel insurance plan before your trip. Most hospitals in Vietnam will require you to completely pay for your services. Foreign nationals run into problems when medical emergencies lead to large medical bills that the individual is unable to pay. For this reason you should find an insurance policy that provides coverage for your medical expenses and it is important to check the exclusions of your policy.
