Vietnam is a country that, since it tumultuous past in the mid 20th century has become one of Asia’s fastest developing countries. Once a part of French Indochina, Vietnam declared its independence after World War 2 and truly achieved this in 1954 with the help of communist China. This led to a split in the country and a violent civil war, the Second Indochina War (Vietnam War), which eventually saw the communist North take over the non communist South. Vietnam remained isolated from the world through its conservative socialist policies that were backed by the old Soviet bloc and China. It was not until the doi moi “renovation” policy in 1986 that began Vietnam’s transition towards global inclusion and participation, with an emphasis on export driven industries and liberal economic policies. Vietnam’s membership in the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement of 2001 have further expanded the country’s status in the world. This participation has culminated in Vietnam’s acceptance into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in November 2007. More visitors are now flocking to a nation that at once seemed too distant or dangerous a destination, with the number steadily increasing over the last ten years. While the country has seen many advances recently, health services in the nation are still developing further.
