Whilst traveling to Spain, one must be aware of the societal differences and the issues that might arise when you arrive. The following are some general points to keep in mind while making a visit to Spain:
There are confirmed cases of Swine Flu (H1N1) in Spain. Enhancing personal hygiene and wearing a face-mask can help to protect against Swine Flu. If you have flu symptoms, you are advised to stay home and avoid any travel until fully recovered.
There is a high threat from terrorism in Spain. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. Recent attacks have taken place on the island of Mallorca (Majorca), in Burgos and in Bilbao (North of Spain).
Forest fires have spread across many Spanish regions since mid-July. In particular, Aragon, the Canary Islands, Catalonia and Murcia have been badly affected. The fires have claimed a number of lives, mainly of firefighters. You are advised to stay alert to the risk in rural areas and avoid any actions that could cause fires, e.g. careless disposal of cigarette butts. Such actions may result in significant punishments.
You are advised that as of 1st January 2006, legislation came into effect across Spain to control smoking in bars, restaurants and other workplaces. Additional legislation are also in place to control drinking and sexual activity in public places, including Spanish beaches. Fines imposed for breach of regulations range from €30 to a maximum of €1500.
As part of the EU measures to improve security, starting from 19th June 2007, passengers flying to Spain are required to provide their date of birth, nationality, and passport number to the airline before travelling.
