Nuclear tests were carried out by North Korea on the 25th of May, 2009. Other missile tests have been launched since then. South Korea’s membership to the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative has been seen as an aggressive act by North Korea, thus ending the ceasefire from the 1953 Armistice Agreement, although they have said this numerous times in the past. While tensions between North and South Korea are high, this does not imply an increased risk for people travelling to or living in South Korea.
The funeral of former South Korean leader Roh Moo-hyun has led to protests and gatherings in the center of Seoul, denouncing the current administration. This has lad to large crowds during weekends, especially during evening hours and a disruption of traffic and public transportation. Care should be taken to avoid these disruptions in the nation’s capital.
There have been confirmed cases of (H1N1) Swine Flu in South Korea. Please be aware of local media and current health reports for the most recent news on the outbreak. With the World Health Organization (WHO) raising its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6, all the necessary precautions should be taken when visiting South Korea during this time.
It is not acceptable to enter North Korea through South Korea, due to the current political tensions between the two countries. The only permissible travel through is by way on an official visit to the Kaesong Industrial Complex.
The terrorism threat in South Korea is low. That being the case, however, one should be aware of the current global risk of terrorism that can occur randomly and indiscriminately in public venues that foreigners and expatriates frequent.
South Korea is typically afflicted by typhoons and tropical storms through the months of June to November. Please follow local weather reports on any delays and flight cancellations that might occur as a result of these storms.
