South Africa Travel Advice

Whilst travelling to South Africa, one must be aware of the cultural and social differences and the issues you might face when you are travelling there. The following are some general points to keep in mind while making a visit to South Africa.
  • There have been confirmed cases of A (H1N1) Swine Flu in South Africa. Please be aware of local media and current health reports for the most recent news on the outbreak. With the World Health Organization (WHO) raising its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6, all the necessary precautions should be taken when travelling to South Africa in the near future.

  • The level of crime in South Africa is high, but this is generally limited to townships and more isolated regions that are typically far from normal tourist destinations.

  • The Standard of driving in South Africa is not as high as most western nations, and as such there are a number of fatal car accidents that occur every day.

  • It is recommended that you carry photocopies of your passport with you, as there have been incidents of passports being stolen in the country.

  • There is a continual moderate threat of terrorism in the country. While it is unlikely that attacks may occur on your visit, always be on the lookout for suspicious activities that may occur in public venues and locations where expatriates and foreign visitors may frequent.

  • South African authorities have stated that only one blank page in ones passport is necessary for entry into the country. There have been recent incidents, however, where visitors have been sent back to their countries because they did not have two blank pages in their passport. It is recommended that you follow this two blank pages rule.

  • It is strongly recommended that you acquire comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling to South Africa. While medical facilities and service are high, cost of services can be expensive. Be sure to check any exclusions, and coverage on any of the activities that you will be undertaking.

Our expert consultants will be glad to advise you on the most appropriate level of insurance that meets your needs for your upcoming travels to South Africa to avoid any medical mishaps.
