• There are confirmed cases of (H1N1) Swine Flu in Russia relating to travellers who have recently returned to Russia from overseas trips. As a result, airports in Moscow have stepped up monitoring of passengers and crew arriving from countries with confirmed H1N1 cases. Anyone displaying flu-like symptoms may be subject to further examination and quarantine. With the World Health Organization (WHO) raising its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to level 6, all the necessary precautions should be taken when traveling to Russia in the near future.

• You are advised against all travel to Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan due to the security situation in the North Caucasus. This also includes the regions of Budyonnovsky, Levokumsky, Neftekumsky, Stepnovsky and Kurskoy in east and Stavropol Krai in the south, which border Dagestan and Chechnya.

• Terrorism and kidnapping remain a serious problem in North Ossetia, Karachai-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria (including the Elbrus area). You are advised against all but essential travel to these regions.

• There is a general threat from terrorism. Attacks cannot be ruled out and could be indiscriminate. Attacks have occurred most frequently in Moscow and in the North Caucasus. Travellers should avoid places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

• You are advised to be aware of the risks of crime. There has been an increase in racially motivated attacks. Visitors of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent should take extra care.

• You are recommended to obtain a comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusion, and ensure that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake.
