The State of Qatar, known commonly as Qatar is an Arab emirate in the Middle East. It occupies a small peninsula that juts out of the larger Arabian Peninsula. In 1995 the current Amir Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani overthrew his father in a bloodless coup, after years of the old Amir channeling oil profits from the rest of the country. This coup was followed by a liberalization of the country on social, political and economic levels. These changes included the endorsement of women’s suffrage, the drafting of a new constitution, and the launch of Al Jazeera, a new English and Arabic news company in the region. Given these significant changes as well as a sustained growth from oil and gas revenues, Qatar has attained the highest per capita GDP in the Middle East, and the second highest in the world.
