Whilst traveling to Portugal, one must be aware of the societal differences and the issues that might arise when you arrive. The following are some general points to keep in mind while making a visit to Portugal.

There have been no cases of human Avian flu (Bird Flu) infections or deaths reported in Portugal. The risk to humans from Avian Influenza is believed to be very low. As a precaution, you are advised to avoid places where you may come into close contact with domestic, caged or wild birds; and ensure poultry and egg dishes are thoroughly cooked. There is a general threat from terrorism in Portugal. Please be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. You are advised to carry personal identification with you at all times. There is a legal requirement to show some form of identification if requested by the police or judicial authorities, especially if you intend to drive in Portugal. You are advised to beware of pickpockets when travelling on public transport and in crowded areas. Do not leave valuables unattended. You are advised that under the Portuguese drug legislation, selling or trafficking of drugs is a criminal offence and subject to severe penalties. If you are caught consuming or in possession of drugs for personal use, you may be subject to a fine or other sanction (including the seizure of personal belongings). You are recommended to obtain a comprehensive travel and medical insurance policy before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and ensure that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake.
