Morocco, which is officially known as the Kingdom of Morocco (the full Arabic name is, Al-Mamlaka al-Magribiyya which translates to "The Western Kingdom"), is strategically located in the Northwest corner of Africa. Morocco has a diverse and unique geography with a rich, distinctive history which has influenced its culture. Morocco has a stable government that has maintained close ties to the United States and Europe. This has helped Morocco to become a popular international tourist destination.
Morocco’s Northern shore is replete with white sandy beaches on the tranquil waters of the Mediterranean Sea, on the Western side the country enjoys the cool blue surfing waters of the Atlantic Ocean. To the East you will encounter the snow capped Atlas mountains which geographically separates the fertile green valleys in the North from the hot sandy desert in the South. The Atlas Mountains (four separate mountain ranges) has attracted many European tourists in search of reasonable priced ski resorts and spas. To the South you will encounter the hot white sands of the vast Sahara desert where there are many accommodations for the tourists wishing to walk, climb, stay in hotels and kasbah style resorts which over look the country side.
Morocco's ideal geographical position has shaped its rich history and harmonious culture. Morocco’s location 8 miles from Spain at the South of the Strait of Gibraltar has brought many foreign empires through the lands over time. Control of the land has passed through the hands of the Berbers, Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Spaniards, and the French. Each have created their own unique imprint on the land, leaving behind many European and Arab influences which are still apparent in Morocco today. Morocco is the place where the past meets the present with a blend of Arab, Berber and European cultures.
Morocco is a moderate and stable Arab country which has maintained close relations with the United States and Europe. Morocco was the first country to recognize the newly formed government of the United States as an independent nation in 1777, the Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship stands as the United State's oldest non-broken friendship treaty, and Morocco was one of the first Arab states to denounce the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Since the 1990's Morocco has been making strong efforts to move the country forwards, especially under King Mohammed VI who has been called "guardian of the poor" because of his fight against poverty. By implementing new social reforms (Moudawana) and creating the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, which investigated allegations of human rights abuses from 1956 to 1999, Morocco was granted a special partnership status with the European Union in 2008.
