Mongolia is landlocked between two major nations – China and Russia – located in Central Asia. During the 12th and 13th century the Mongol empire expanded across Eastern Europe to Asia lead by Genghis Khan; later in the 16th and 17th century Mongolia was influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, which plays a prominent role in the culture today. The culture still reflects the fact that a significant part of the population still leads a nomadic lifestyle spread across the vast plateau of Mongolia.
Ulaanbaatar the capital has changed location more the twenty times over the past 230 years, finally settling in a sweeping valley in the north of Mongolia.
After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, the Mongolian economy suffered a setback and poverty increased. However, in more recent times the economy has been able to benefit from the rapid expansion of the economies of its powerful neighbors – China and Russia; the demand for livestock and minerals being the driving force behind the recovery in Mongolia.
Mongolia has been able to make in-roads in eradicating disease. The healthcare system is in need of development and the government is working on a strategic plan to improve the system by working closely with the World Health Organisation (WHO). There is a long way to go to modernize the healthcare network but the government is strongly committed and future improvements are expected.
