Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, is located off the south-eastern coast of Africa. Madagascar is an island nation, and is the fourth largest island in the world. This truly unique island which was separated from the African continent 165 million years ago, since then it has evolved into a truly remarkable place, where 80% of the wildlife and plants are endemic to Madagascar due to the isolation of the island. The Malagasy are understood to be descendants of Africans and Indonesians who settled on the island more than 2000 years ago. After the French colonial rule, Madagascar gained independence in 1960 and since that time the country has seen conflict within the country. The World Bank estimates that 70% of Malagasy currently live on less than $1 per day. The island is troubled by serious diseases, with hospitals poorly equipped to conduct major operations, therefore serious medical needs may have to be treated in nearby South Africa or La Reunions.
