Laos Global Health Insurance / Travel Advice

Whilst travelling to Laos, one must be aware of the cultural and social differences and the issues you might face when you are travelling there. The following is some general travel advice to keep in mind while making a visit to Laos.

Laos Travel Advice

  • There have been confirmed cases of (H1N1) Swine Flu in Laos. Please be aware of local media and current health reports for the most recent news on the outbreak. With the World Health Organization (WHO) raising its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6, all the necessary precautions should be taken when travelling to Laos in the near future.

  • Be aware that some countries do not have consular representation in Laos. Get in contact with your home government about its diplomatic relations with the government of Laos, and any issues that may arise on your visit there.

  • The terrorism threat in Laos is low. That being the case, however, one should be aware of the on-going and sustained global risk of terrorism that can occur randomly and indiscriminately in certain public venues and other locations that foreigners and expatriates may frequent.

  • Be aware of the local conventions and respect any of the local traditions that exist in Laos. Do not involve yourself with illicit substances. The penalty for the possession, trafficking and manufacture of illegal drugs include long prison sentences and the death penalty.

  • Unexploded ordnance still poses a major risk in the nation. Having been heavily bombed during the American Vietnam War, 10 of 18 Laotian provinces have been described as being “severely contaminated” with artillery, mines, grenades and other weapons. Great care should be taken when visiting rural areas where these weapons can be hidden from view.

  • Outbreaks of the Avian Influenza have occurred in the nation which led to a small number of fatalities as recent as March 2007. Follow reports on any other outbreaks that may occur in the future.

  • Photographing or visiting of certain sites in Laos, such as military or government headquarters can lead to arrest and detention. Make sure to avoid these sites completely.

  • It is strongly recommended that you acquire comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling to Laos. Medical facilities and service is generally poor, and the cost of services at any private clinics can be expensive. Be sure to check any exclusions, and coverage on any of the activities that you will be undertaking.
