Laos, known officially as the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, is a landlocked country located in Southeast Asia, bordered by China in the north, Cambodia in the south, Thailand and Burma in the east and Vietnam in the west. Laos traces its roots back to the Lan Xang Kingdom or “Land of a Million Elephants” that thrived in the region from the 14th through the 18th centuries. After becoming a part of French Indochina, and then a protectorate of the colonial power, Laos achieved its freedom from colonial rule in 1949. Followed by a 10 year civil war that saw the old existing monarchy lose its power, the Communist Pathet Lao took control of the government. The system then is the same one that exists today, making Laos one of the few single party communist nations remaining in the world. In 1986 Laos began a gradual return to economic liberalization and an emphasis on private enterprise. Today Laos is a rapidly expanding and evolving country with a real GDP growth rate of close to 8%. The country hopes to achieve the goal of graduating from the World Bank’s list of least developed countries in the next decade, a feat that Laos has placed itself in the position of accomplishing.
