Kiribati was the first inhabited place on earth to enter into the new millennium on the 1 January 2000. Gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1979, Kiribati is slowly feeling the influence of western culture, with bars, movies, the Internet and car use starting to increase in this Pacific Ocean Island.
