There have been large scale demonstrations that began after the Iranian Presidential elections on June 12th, 2009. Many people were killed during the violence against police and the Basij militia, with many also being arrested for their involvement. There has been a clamp down by security forces to inhibit further demonstrations by the opposition. There is still a risk of smaller rallies and violence. You should stay away from all demonstrations and gatherings that may lead to more violence.
The Iranian regime has placed blame on certain foreign nations for inciting more demonstrations and violence due to the elections. You should check with your home government on its stance on the current situation in Iran, and if any travel there may pose a risk to you. If you do travel to Iran, always maintain a high level of awareness of your security, especially in public locations and venues.
All travel within 100 kilometers of the Iran/Afghanistan border or within 10 kilometers of the Iran/Iraq border is not advised. The border of Pakistan is also insecure, and it is advisable to keep away from anywhere east of the line running from Jask to Bam, including travel to Bam itself.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised it Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6. Please be aware of any developments or medical concerns that may arise on your visit to Iran.
Iran has a general threat of terrorism at this time. There have been fatal terrorist bombings in recent years. Be aware of the global indiscriminate terrorist attacks that may occur, especially against expatriates and foreign visitors, and remain vigilant in places of congregation such as public venues and expatriate establishments.
In 2007, there were several incidents where Belgian tourists were kidnapped in Sistan-Baluchistan, as well as a Japanese national in Bam. These victims were taken for long periods of time. That said, there is a significant risk of kidnapping to foreigners by Baluchi separatists in the country. Be vigilant of suspicious persons and vehicles that may be following you and always keep away from desolate and isolated places, especially at night.
Debit cards, credit cards and ATM cards are typically not accepted in Iran, and traveler’s checks are almost impossible to be exchanged. Be sure to carry the necessary and appropriate monetary funds for your travels.
The process for applying for an Iranian visa can be long and unpredictable. It is imperative that you do not make travel arrangements and reservations for hotels or local transport until you have secured the document.
It is strongly recommended that you acquire comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling to Iran. While medical facilities and service are adequate, the cost of services can be expensive. Be sure to check any exclusions, and coverage on any of the activities that you will be undertaking.
