India Travel Advice

Whilst traveling to India, one must be aware of the societal differences and the issues that might arise when you travel there. The following are some general points to keep in mind while making a visit to India:
  • You are advised against all travel to, or through rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir other than Ladakh; all travel in the immediate vicinity of the border with Pakistan (Northern and Western India), other than at the international border crossing at Wagah; and all travel in Manipur and Tripura (East and North East India).

  • You are advised against all but essential travel to Srinagar (Northern India) and Imphal (East and North East India). If you do travel to these areas, it is recommended you do so only by air.

  • There have been confirmed cases of (H1N1) Swine Flu in India. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6, all necessary precautions should be taken when traveling to India in the near future. Upon arrival in India, visitors from affected countries (including the UK) should be prepared for questioning or be checked for symptoms by medical staff. Travelers suspected of having H1N1 will be admitted to designated government hospitals for compulsory quarantine, testing and treatment. Visitors should consult their healthcare provider before travelling to India.

  • There continues to be a high threat from terrorism throughout India. Recent attacks in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad were reported. Attacks that took place in Hyderabad and Bangalore targeted public places, including luxury hotels, railway stations, markets and places of worship. Travelers should avoid places frequented by Westerners and expatriates, including major metropolitan centres (Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai) and tourist areas such as Goa.

  • You are advised to keep a photocopy of your passport, Indian visa and flight ticket separate from the originals when traveling.

  • You are recommended to obtain a comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusion, and ensure that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake.
