India, known officially as the Republic of India is a country located in Southern Asia. India is the largest country in the Indian subcontinent and shares borders with Pakistan to the west, China and Nepal to the north, Bhutan to the north-east, and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia lie to the south-east in the Indian Ocean. It is the seventh largest country in the world by area and, with over a billion people, is second only to China in population. It is an extremely diverse country, with vast differences in geography, climate, culture, language and ethnicity across its expanse, and prides itself on being the largest democracy on Earth.
India's puzzleboard of 28 states holds virtually every kind of landscape imaginable. An abundance of mountain ranges and national parks provide ample opportunity for eco-tourism and trekking, and its sheer size promises something for everyone.
In India, the hospitals are run by government, charitable trusts and by private organizations. The quality of India's public healthcare facilities very much depends on the region but is generally below standards that visitors were used to in their home country. Visitors are recommended to use only private healthcare facilities which, fortunately, are found in every major Indian city.
These days some of the major private hospitals are attracting patients from neighboring countries such as Pakistan, countries in the Middle East, and some European countries by providing quality treatment at low cost. In 2006, India spent 4.9% of GDP on health care, or US$109 per capita. Apart from the modern system of medicine, traditional and indigenous medicinal systems like Ayurvedic and Unani systems are in practice throughout the country.
