Greece Global Health Insurance / Travel Advice

 

 

Whilst traveling to Greece, one must be aware of the societal differences and the issues that might arise when you arrive. The following is some general travel advice to keep in mind while making a visit to Greece.

Greece Travel Advice

 
  • There have been reported cases of Swine Flu (H1N1) in Greece. Enhancing personal hygiene and wearing a face-mask can help to protect against Swine Flu. If you have symptoms, you are advised to stay home and avoid any travel until fully recovered.

  • There is a general threat from terrorism in Greece. Please be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

  • December 2009 is the first anniversary of the serious riots that followed the shooting of a Greek teenager in 2008. Disturbances may take place in major urban centres before and during the anniversary. Tourists are advised to exercise caution and avoid demonstrations.

  • Following a landslide at Tempi on 17th December, part of the Athens-Thessaloniki road has been closed. You are advised that disruption is expected to last a few months.

  • You are advised to maintain high standards of public behaviour in Greece. The Greek police will not accept rowdy or indecent behaviour, especially where excessive alcohol consumption is involved. Greek courts impose heavy fines or prison sentences on people who behave indecently.

  • You are advised not to involve with drugs of any kind in Greece. Possession of even small quantities can lead to long-term imprisonment.

  • You are advised that the plant Khat is an illegal narcotic in Greece. You will be arrested and detained with the possibility of a prison sentence if you are caught trying to take Khat into Greece.

  • You are advised that driving any vehicle whilst over the legal drinking limit is heavily penalised in Greece and can result in a heavy fine and/or imprisonment.

  • There is a requirement in Greece to show some form of identification. You are advised to carry personal identification with you at all times, preferably a passport or document with a photograph on it.

  • You are advised that starting from 1st July 2009, it is illegal to smoke in hospitals, schools, vehicles and all public places. The penalty for violating this law is a fine of up to €500.

  • Mainland Greece and most of the Greek islands are in seismically active zones, earth tremors are common. Serious earthquakes are less frequent but do occur.

  • Forest fires are very common during Greece’s hot and dry summers. Please take care when visiting or driving through woodland and forest areas; ensure that cigarette ends are properly extinguished and disposed of carefully, do not light barbecues and do not leave any rubbish, particularly empty bottles, behind.

  • You are recommended to obtain a comprehensive travel and medical insurance policy before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and ensure that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake.
