Healthcare System information/Insurance news

France is distinguished for offering its people with one of the most constant and accessible social systems in the world. The French government always contributes a significant amount of its GDP towards implementing better social programs and progressive social reforms. One such program that is a great example of their progress is the French healthcare system. The system receives approximately 9.8% of the country’s total GDP annually, and was voted by the World Health Organization (WHO) on at least one occasion as being the best healthcare system in the world. The healthcare system is directly funded by French public taxation; each citizen contributes approximately 20% of their annual salary towards keeping these social and medical care services in place. This contribution towards social stability is known in France as ‘Securite sociale’. This allows the peace of mind that every citizen and legal resident of France can have access to world class, top quality healthcare. This does not mean to say that the healthcare services that French citizens receive are free, but rather they are more affordable than similar, high quality treatments offered in other countries.

If a person gets healthcare or medical treatment in France, no matter what type of treatment they were offered or received, whether in a private or public medical facility, they are typically compensated up to 70% of the final cost by the government inside of 10 days of having had the medical treatment in question. This ‘Securite sociale’ system is exceptionally intricate and covers more facets of the French social welfare organization than just the Healthcare system. The ‘Securite sociale’ system covers everyone in France who has employee status as well as that person’s family, including spouse and children. Since 2006 the French healthcare system expanded outside of the traditional coverage of the past to greater heights with CMU (couverture maladie universelle) which essentially provides individuals with universal coverage for any injuries or illness that they may have. CMU coverage is available to any person with legal residential status in France who has had 3 continuous months of residing in the nation. In other words, everyone who is not covered by the ‘Securite sociale’ is provided coverage under CMU.

This, however, does not grant foreign nationals the right to France’s superior health system in the form of CMU the moment they stop off the plane. One of the main determinants of foreign citizens obtaining a French resident permit is the ability to supply evidence of medical insurance that will cover, partly or entirely, any possible medical expenditure that they may accrue. Even if a foreign national is not applying for a French resident permit it is a usual prerequisite for medical coverage of a certain variety if they are planning on living and staying in the nation for any period beyond one month in duration. The explanation for this is the following: while the French medical system is ordered in a way that makes it moderately priced to french citizens, it is by no means completely inexpensive. Foreign nationals who have been provided medical care in France and do not have health insurance usually have a particularly tough time being able to pay for the expensive top quality treatments that they have received. In a bid to stop foreigners receiving what constituted as free treatment, the government made it mandatory for people of certain nationalities to have some form of healthcare coverage that There are problems intrinsic in the French Medical system. Certain critics cite the medical service a wasteful program claiming that persons who have right to use of a near free form of medical treatment will often abuse this benefit. Because of the levels of expenditure and compensation, the French healthcare systems are some of the costliest in the globe. This has come about as the French government tries to make back some of the losses that it has accumulated in offering a world class public healthcare system to its people. Analysts foresee that the healthcare and medical service in France could have a negative balance of close to Euro $70 billion by the conclusion of 2020, and it is this calculation that has caused medical costs rising dramatically in recent years in the private sector, as well as creating a crisis inside the general public healthcare system. It is important, for the aforementioned reasons, that visitors and expatriates obtain a comprehensive medical and travel insurance policy before the visit the country. This will allow a complete freedom from doubt of being able to receive world class medical treatments from the best medical practitioners and institutions in the world.
