East Timor, or Timor Leste as the locals call it, is a young Southeast Asian country which voted against autonomy from Indonesia in favor of complete independence in 1999. When East Timor removed itself from Indonesian rule, it was faced with a mountain to climb; nearly 70% of its infrastructure was destroyed during separatist conflict with the Indonesian government; a situation only recently rectified as the country has started to rebuild with aid from international bodies and governments. The tourism industry is in the early stages of development, but the country has much to offer ranging from magnificent scuba diving and superb beaches to historic culture which is infused with Asian and European influence. The healthcare system is basic but is slowly developing with the rest of country.
