Official Name: Known officially as the Kingdom of Denmark, or commonly as Denmark.

Capital: Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark, it is located in the Eastern portion of Denmark on the islands of Zealand and Amager.

Location: Denmark is located in Northern Europe between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The country is bordered by Germany to the South and Sweden to the North. Denmark also includes the Faroe Islands and Greenland in the North Atlantic.

Size: The total land area of Denmark is 43,094 square kilometers and this ranks 133rd globally. The size is slightly less than twice the size of Massachusetts in the USA.

Climate: Climate in Denmark is mostly temperate, with windy winters and cool summers. Summer extends from June to August. Winter is from December to March, wet with long periods of frost. February is the coldest month. Spring and autumn are generally mild.

Population: Denmark has an estimated population of 5.5 million people and ranks 110th globally. The country has a population growth rate of 0.28%.

Life expectancy at birth: The average life expectancy at birth for citizens of Denmark is 78.3 years, ranking at 46th globally. Females have a longer average life span at 80.78 years, while Males average at 75.96 years from birth.

Prevalence of HIV/AIDS: The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Denmark is about 0.2%, placing 103rd globally. This means that around 4,800 people are living with the disease in the country.

Major Illnesses: Potential healths risks in Denmark include Swine Flu (H1N1), Avian Influenza (Bird Flu), Tetanus and Hypothermia (or exposure) in the winter months. There are also a number of cases of seasonal depression during the darker months of the year.

Ethnic Groups: Denmark is mainly comprised of Scandinavians at 87%. The remaining 13% population includes Inuit, Faroese, German, Turkish, Iranian and Somali ethnics.

Languages: The official language in Denmark is Danish. Other languages include Faroese, Greenlandic and German. English is the predominant second language.

Religion:The major religion in Denmark is Evangelical Lutheran accounting for 95% of the population. Other religions include Christian (includes Protestant and Roman Catholic) at 3% and Islam at 2%.

Government: The Government of Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a representative democracy based on a unicameral parliamentary system. The affairs of Government are decided by a Cabinet of Ministers, which is led by a Prime Minister. The Cabinet and the Prime Minister are responsible for their actions to the Parliament of Denmark.

Head of State: The Head of State in Denmark is Queen Margrethe II. In accordance with the Danish Constitution, the Danish Monarch, as head of state, is the theoretical source of all executive, judicial and legislative power. The Monarch retains the ability to deny giving a bill royal assent as well as choosing and dismissing the Prime Minister, although in modern times this becomes increasingly more unlikely, as it would cause a constitutional crisis.

Head of Government: The Head of Government in Denmark is Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen. He is the leader of a political coalition in the Danish parliament and the leader of the cabinet.The Minister and members of the cabinet are appointed by the Crown on basis of the party composition in Parliament, and confirmed by a vote of confidence.

Military: The Federal Armed Forces of Denmark consists of the defense command, which includes the Army Operational Command, Admiral Danish Fleet, Island Command Greenland, Tactical Air Command and Home Guard. The suitable age for male compulsory military service is 18 years of age. Women are only eligible to volunteer for military service. Conscripts serve an initial training period that varies from 4 to 12 months according to specialization; reservists are assigned to mobilization units following completion of their conscript service.

Economy: Denmark has very few natural resources, the service sector makes up the vast amount of the employment and economy of the country. Denmark has a technologically advanced free-market economy, mainly involved in high value-added production such as processing and finishing products. Main exports include industrial products and agricultural products (mainly livestock-based products such as cheese, pork and other meats). Denmark's reliance on export trade has meant that its economy has been sensitive to fluctuations in world demand. The U.S.A. is Denmark's largest non-European trading partner, and major Amercian exports to Denmark include aircraft, computers, machinery and instruments. Among major Danish exports to the U.S. are industrial machinery, chemical products, furniture, pharmaceuticals, and canned ham and pork. Due to the geographic location of Denmark, it is an important distribution point for Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, England, and the rest of Europe.

GDP: Denmark has a purchasing power parity of US$ 204.1 billion, ranking at 52nd in the world. The country has a negative growth rate of -1.2%, which ranks 209th globally.
