The island nation of Cyprus is located in the European Mediterranean, with Turkey, Lebanon and Syria as close neighbors. The culture is dominated by Western European traditions, with an underlying Asian and African influence. These combinations make Cyprus one of the main tourist destinations in the Mediterranean.
Steeped in history, rich culture and golden beaches, Cyprus has a booming and lucrative tourist industry. Tourists are drawn to this Mediterranean island; the ancient city of Salamis, the Gothic castles and the splendid beaches of the Karpas region. This is combined with a well developed infrastructure catering for tourists and expatriates.
Cyprus gained independence from the Britain in 1960. An invasion by Turkey, in 1974, resulted in the invasion of the north region of the island, taking over more than a third of the island. In 1983 the occupied Turkish region was declared the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is only recognized by Turkey in the international community.
The healthcare system in Cyprus consists of public and private run medical facilities, providing a good standard of care. Entry into the European Union insured the standard of healthcare developed and improved. It is still not to the standard provided in Western Europe but steps are being taken to effect further improvements.
