The healthcare system in Costa Rica is comprised of private and public services. Costa Rica's nationalized health care is available to all Costa Rican's, however red tape can make for long waiting periods, but the quality of Costa Rica's health care is excellent. The government in Costa Rica has a network of more than 30 hospitals and more than 250 clinics providing low-cost health care to Costa Ricans. The government run health care system is known as Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS), which has been operating for more than 60 years. The CCSS is available to visitors and foreign residents living in Costa Rica, hoewever a monthly fee- based on income is required to join the National insurance scheme. Alternatively health insurance can be bought from the state Instituto de Seguro Nacional (INS), which is valid with 200 plus affiliated doctors, hospitals and pharmacies in the private sector. If you are unfortunate whilst in Costa Rica, to have a seriously ill child who needs to be hospitalized, The National Children's hospital in San Jose is the only one in Costa Rica to admit children.
It is recommended that those who are traveling to Costa Rica take out private holiday health insurance, as they will not qualify for the CCSS and INS. Most hospitals and doctors will accept cash. However, in cases such as serious and life threating illnesses or injuries, it is strongly advised additional holiday cover is purchased for extreme eventualities such as emergency evacuation.
