Guangzhou Hospitals

  
  Insurance companies in Guangzhou require that payment is made first, and then claims and receipts sent to the insurance company. Only top are recognized by local insurance companies, while some hospitals only accept a limited number of insurance companies. Check with your insurance broker and your local health care provider about Guangzhou international health insurance.

Many companies with operations in Guangzhou provide their employees with membership to local and worldwide medical centers. These centers have top Western and Chinese doctors. If major surgery is required these medical centers have links with the major local hospitals and will provide full medical support whenever needed. In the very rare case that top medical treatment cannot be obtained in Guangzhou, patients will be evacuated to Hong Kong.

Generally, Medical services for foreigners in Guangzhou are fairly good. However, if expatriates who suffer from serious illnesses or critical conditions and wish to have medical attention in western convention, they might choose to go to Hong Kong . Taking the advantage of convenient transportation between Guangzhou and Hong Kong (takes less than 2 hours, train or plane), Guangzhou expats could enjoy the medical services options in both cities.

Following list merely represents a list of information of some of the medical facilities often used by foreigners in Guangzhou. The Consulate leaves the decision rights to the person whether to avail or not to avail of medical services from medical facilities mentioned below.

This clinic is run by foreign doctors who has overseas training and experience. They have a program called "one week program" in which you can become a member for a week. Consultation fee and commonly prescribed medicines like antibiotic, cough syrup, anti-histamine is covered under membership fee once you sign up in the one week program. Multiple visits to the doctor during that week period is also covered.

The Guangzhou Can Am Medical Clinic offers a second choice for Guangzhou expatriates who wish to visit a Western standard health care setting. No membership is required, though those who are members ($120 fee) received a 20% discount on services. On site laboratory, radiology, and pharmaceutical services are part of the operations. Four medical doctors, one dentist, and one professional counselor are on staff.

Visitors are welcome if you'd like to have a tour of their facilities. The clinic has also arranged direct billing with 10 insurance companies and is looking to increase this list.

Clinic hours: Monday through Friday 9:00am to 12:30pm and 2:00pm to 6:00pm. Saturday 9:00am to 12:30pm.

For more serious emergencies such as trauma injuries with extensive bleeding, unconsciousness or suspected heart related problems or any condition that requires immediate treatment, can be handled at:

Medical staff members can handle any emergency treatment for evaluation and stabilization. This is the facility where the Fok Heart Center is located which can also help you with any possible heart related emergencies. This hospital has an inpatient and an outpatient department.

Sun Yatsen Memorial Hospital (approx. 15 minutes by walk from Consulate)

The urgency and the location of the patient would have to be the primary factor in making the decision to use this facility. Assurance had been given that they use disposable needles and syringes and sterilization is in evidence for those requiring such but there is no way of being able to confirm the validity of this information. They also have an outpatient department in this hospital.

Guangdong Concord Medical Center is located at the 9th floor of the Guangdong Provincial Hospital.

This hospital is clean and modern and has a private inpatient floor. It has an inpatient and an outpatient unit located in a large government hospital. Outpatient visits are handled by staff physicians by appointment. Specialists are called in as needed or the patient is escorted to see the specialist. There is a membership fee. Make sure to make an appointment before going in for check up since this facility gives priority to its members and does not guarantee service to non-members

MEDICAL EMERGENCY CHECKLIST

  
  Acquaint all family members and domestics with a medical doctor, his office and staff and doctor's preferred medical facility/hospital.
  • Obtain normal hospital admission and emergency care policy and documentation required.
  • Arrange for a "letter of guarantee" from your employer to be kept on file at the hospital to cover your medical charges.
  • Keep handy a notarized letter of authority for medical treatment for times when you are not available.
  • Practice and keep a record of the emergency route to the hospital and how long it takes.
  • Put aside, and check periodically, enough money for taxi fare for an emergency trip to the hospital. Advise maid or authorized person of the location.
  • Display in several areas of your home a list of emergency telephone numbers, such as doctor, hospital, ambulance, dentist, fire, police, etc.
  • Carry with you at all times your physicians name, emergency number and preferred hospital for treatment in case of an accident. A notarized letter of authority is advisable when you are out of the country.
  • Ensure you have worked out an emergency plan for your maid to follow. We suggest you write it down, include the emergency numbers and have it laminated. Give your maid the plan with some emergency taxi fare. Familiarize her with the plan on a regular basis.
