Whilst traveling to Canada, one must be aware of the societal differences and the issues that might arise when you arrive. The following are some general points to keep in mind while making a visit to Canada.

  • There are confirmed human cases (including deaths) of Swine Flu (H1N1) in Canada. Enhancing personal hygiene and wearing a face-mask can help to protect against Swine Flu. If you have flu symptoms, you are advised to stay home and avoid any travel until fully recovered.

  • There is a general threat from terrorism in Canada. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

  • Weather in Canada can be harsh at different times of the year. You are advised to monitor local news and weather reports for the latest information.

  • You are advised to check the entry requirements of the US authorities if you intend to travel to the United States from Canada.

  • You are recommended to obtain a comprehensive travel and medical insurance policy before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and ensure that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake.

  • You are advised against changing currency anywhere other than banks or legitimate Bureaux de Change.

  • If you plan to drive in Canada, please note that Canadians drive on the right side of the road. Seat belts are compulsory. Right turns on red lights are permitted except in some parts of Quebec. You are advised not to drink and drive.

  • Winter driving conditions in Canada can be extreme. You are advised to monitor local news and weather broadcasts before driving in heavy winter conditions.

  • You are advised to declare to Canadian Customs any meat, animal or dairy products that you maybe bringing into Canada at any time. Banned food products will be confiscated and maybe subject to heavy penalties.
