A conflict between Thai and Cambodian troops occurred on October 15th, 2008 along the disputed border region near the Preah Vihear temple, also known as the Khao Pra Viharn in Thai. This fighting continued on April 2nd, 2009 and further hostilities could continue occurring. Talks between the two nations have begun, but tensions still exist. It is advised that all visitors avoid travel to this region and to be aware of the conditions in other border regions and crossings between Thailand and Cambodia.
There have recently been confirmed cases of the A (H1N1) or Swine flu in Cambodia, with the World Health Organization (WHO) increasing the Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6. Please be conscious of local health reports and announcements on the outbreak.
The terror risk in Cambodia is low. This being the case, however, you should keep in mind the continual worldwide risk of terrorism that typically takes place in public venues where expatriates and foreign travelers congregate. On January 2nd, 2009, three small explosive devices were located and safely destroyed in Phnom Penh. Try to keep away from demonstrations and political rallies where these incidents could occur.
Cambodian registered and operated airlines fail to comply with the international standards for safety. Great care should be taken when choosing the right carrier for visits to and around the country.
There are major illnesses that can pose a serious health risk in Cambodia. These include Hepatitis A, B, C, and E, bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, Japanese Encephalitis, Typhoid Fever, Dengue Fever, Malaria, and H5N1 (bird flu) which has been found in the wild and captive bird populations of the country. Most recently Cambodia has had confirmed cases of H1N1 swine flu. Great care should be observed when travelling to the country, and all the necessary vaccinations should be taken to avoid any of these serious diseases.
It is recommended that you acquire a comprehensive medical and travel insurance plan before your trip. Most hospitals in Cambodia provide poor service and variable services could mean very expensive medical costs. Foreign nationals run into problems when medical emergencies lead to large medical bills that the individual is unable to pay. For this reason you should find an insurance policy that provides coverage for your medical expenses and it is important to check the exclusions of your policy.
