Burma is also known as Myanmar. The poet Kipling wrote “this is Burma, and it will be quite unlike any land you know about,” in a poem written a hundred years ago during the reign of the British Empire - and it still remains true today. This country, in South-east Asia, shares it borders with Thailand, China, Laos, India and Bangladesh, but is still ostracized by the international community. This is due the hard line Burmese regime who impose strict policies on it citizens and has a record of poor human rights. However, tourists are still drawn to visit this country by the marvelous surroundings ranging from the ancient city streets to the breathtaking Buddhist temples of Bagan.
There is a small expatriate community in Burma consisting of aid workers, teachers and private sector employees; however, numbers are nowhere near the level of neighboring Thailand. The healthcare system is regarded as extremely inadequate to meet the needs of foreigners or the Burmese people. The country is infested with disease and outbreaks are sometimes uncontrollable. The country has plentiful resources from oil, jade, fish and natural gas, however the Burmese Junta are slow and unwilling to take advantage of these valuable commodities, which would, if developed, bring foreign investment and thus improve the life of the Burmese people. Despite these obstacles, tourism is growing steadily and Burma has the opportunity to develop into a top holiday destination.
