Bolivia, officially known as the Plurinational State of Bolivia, is a landlocked country in South America. It shares its borders with Brazil in the north east, South Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru to the West. Bolivia was conquered by the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. During this period of colonization, the territory was known as “upper Peru” or “Charcas”. While Bolivia gained independence in 1809, the country was at war for 16 years until it established itself as a Republic. The landscape of Bolivia is breathtaking; to west is the Andes and to the eastern lowland the Amazon basin. Unfortunately, the country has an approximate poverty rate of 60%, with a healthcare system not meeting the needs of the population. Rural areas are blighted by disease. International organizations are focusing on improving the medical care that the Bolivian people receive.
