Azerbaijan was once part of the Soviet Union – gaining independence in 1991 - and is now an important country in the Eurasian continent. While the capital, Baku, has rapidly transformed itself into a highly developed modern city, the surrounding villages still remain untouched with picturesque views – there is a particularly attractive mountain resort at Sak. Azerbaijan has been able to develop a tourist business as a result of these natural attributes.
Baku is the largest, as well as the most populated region in South Caucasus, with a rapid growth rate linked to an abundance of oil; but the basic infrastructure still resembles Soviet Union times. There is a strong expatriate community, due to international corporations being present in the county and the work opportunities available. However, despite the strengthening economy, the majority of the population of Azerbaijan still has limited medical care; although the government is planning to improve this in the near future.
