There continues to be a general threat from terrorism in Australia. The risk of indiscriminate and random attacks in the country are always a possibility, especially in the venues where foreign travelers and expatriates my frequent. Heightened medical precautions should be taken when travelling in the Northern Territories, parts of Western Australia, and certain regions of Queensland. This is due to a seasonal outbreak of dengue fever in April 2009 in the north of Queensland that resulted in as many as 900 cases and one fatality. Be aware of local health reports and coverage on the outbreak.
Australia is afflicted by a number of seasonal natural disasters which include flash flooding, bushfires and tropical cyclones. The tropical cyclone season typically runs between November and April. Due to these storms, heavy flooding took place in south-east Queensland and north New South Wales from March through May of 2009. The drier season brings a higher risk of bushfires (forest fires) between November and February. One of the more recent bush fires occurring in February 2009 in Victoria was one of the worst bushfires recorded. Follow local media coverage and weather reports on any disasters that may occur on your visit to Australia.
